Parks Receives State Awards

The Parks Department took home top honors at the NYS Recreation and Park Society Annual Awards Ceremony held in Rochester last month. Margaret Tzen,Beaver Lake Nature Center Naturalist was presented with the Society’s Young Professional Award and the Parks Mobile Website won the 2013 Multimedia Award. 

Originally from California, Margaret graduated from Cornell University in 2009 with a BS in Natural Resources and started at Beaver Lake in 2011. In addition to her regular duties as a Naturalist, Margaret has created a Monthly Teacher’s Newsletter, an After-School Ecology Club, several new programs including the Let’s Pretend Series for pre-schoolers, a Listening Walk with a Naturalist, many fliers and brochures and assisted with exhibit design and building.

Launched in March of last year, the Parks Mobile Website was created to enable residents and visitors alike to find park information, our events calendar, directions and more wherever they had access to the internet. Each page was designed for ease of use with the complete website available at any time to users.

The Young Professional Award recognizes excellence by a young professional having less than five years experience in the field of recreation, parks, conservation and leisure services. Individuals should excel in leadership, professionalism, and the promotion of the leisure field. The Multimedia Award recognizes outstanding special public relations materials, research reports,newsletters, maps, website development, videos, etc.
