CNY to host Special Olympics New York State Games

The Special Olympics New York State Winter Games will take place February 21-23, 2014 in various venues throughout Syracuse. Nearly 1,000 Athletes and Coaches will be on hand from across the state to compete in the State Winter Games which are one of three annual state competitions and more than 5,200 competitions held each year throughout New York.

Honorable Joanne M. Mahoney, Onondaga County Executive will serve as the Honorary Chair of the event.

"We are excited to be back in such a great community," said Neal Johnson, President & CEO of Special Olympics New York. "Syracuse is a natural fit for our Winter Games."

"Syracuse holds a special place in our hearts for Special Olympics New York. We are thrilled to connect our incredible winter wonderland to this unbelievably important event in 2014 and 2015. Welcome back!" stated David Holder, President of the Syracuse Convention & Visitors Bureau.

 The weekend will begin with Opening Ceremonies Friday, February 21st at the Syracuse Oncenter complete with the ceremonial parade of athletes, motivational speakers, local entertainment and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Competition will begin Saturday, February 22 in five sports - Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoeing, Skating, and Floor Hockey.

10:30 am -3:00 pm – Alpine Skiing – Greek Peak Mountain Resort, 2000 New York 392, Cortland

9:30 am -2:45 pm – Cross Country Skiing – Highland Forest, 1254 Highland Park Road, Fabius

11:00 am-2:30 pm- Figure Skating – War Memorial at Oncenter, 515 Montgomery St, Syracuse

10:30 am – 4:00 pm – Floor Hockey Team – Syracuse Oncenter, 800 South State St., Syracuse

 10:30 am -3:00 pm Snowshoeing – Thornden Park, Thornden Park Dr., Syracuse
