Mahoney Announces West Shore Trail Expansion Opening
Monday, April 14, 2014
Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney today announced the grand opening of the Onondaga Lake West Shore Trail Extension will be held on Sunday, May 18th. The opening day celebration will begin with an official ribbon cutting at 10:45am, followed by the Lake View Point Walk/Run and a Community Expo featuring recreational and environmental organizations.
“Our community has not had access to this side of Onondaga Lake and the views are incredible,” said Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney. “The opening of the West Shore trail expansion will give all of us access to these beautiful vistas and a brand new walking trail. We thought a fun run and expo would be the perfect way to open this trail. A special thank you also to Onondaga County Parks and Onondaga County DOT who have worked hard to complete this project and we thank them for their hard work.”
The non-competitive walk/run is named for the Lake View Point hotel, the first of the Onondaga Lake resorts which opened in 1872, and will offer visitors an opportunity to explore the 2.5 miles of the newly opened trail while enjoying the view of the southeastern shore. The walk/run begins at 11:00am.
The expo will feature live music, exhibits, food trucks and fun, interactive activities for all ages from parks and a variety of community organizations such as the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Beaver Lake Nature Center, Syracuse Sail & Power Squadron, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Onondaga Audubon, Syracuse Chargers, the Nine Mile Conservation Council, the Izaak Walton League and more.
The first 100 visitors will receive a commemorative t-shirt courtesy of O'Brien & Gere and 200 tree seedlings will be given away courtesy of the NYS DEC. from 11:00am-4:00pm
All activities and parking are free and will take place on the west side of Onondaga Lake in the Orange/Fairgrounds parking lot, near the new Onondaga Lake Visitor Center, located off of Route 690.
